CompEx EX12 (Application Design Engineer)

Compex Ex12 Description/Objectives

The CompEx Ex12 Application design engineer qualification has been developed to ensure the core competence of application design engineers who specify electrical equipment in hazardous areas.  Ex12 meets the competency requirements of IEC60079-14 for Designers (design & selection).

Upon completion of the CompEx Design Ex12 course, the student will be able to demonstrate:    

  • Understanding of Ex markings.
  • Ability to select Ex equipment based on area classification
  • Perform IS Loop calculations for the single barrier.
  • Define proper installation methodology based on the method of protection .

Target Audience

This qualification is suitable for aspiring or practicing application design engineers who have experience of selecting certified Ex electrical equipment for installations in locations where gases and vapours can potentially create a hazardous environment

Outcome

Candidates who are successful in all the assessments will receive a CompEx Certificate in Core Competence.

Prerequisite

Practicing competent electrical application design engineers. Practicing competent electrical and instrument operatives & engineer

Employer supporting letter confirming the benefit of the Ex12 course for the individual. A reasonable standard of English is expected.

  • Theory only, with no practical elements, Guided learning (theoretical 20-25 hours, Applied learning 2-4 hours, Various points of assessment throughout the course

COURSE OVERVIEW

The CompEx Ex12 Application Design Engineer qualification at iSkills is the benchmark certification for engineers specifying electrical equipment in hazardous areas. Aligned to IEC 60079-14 competency requirements for Designers, it covers Ex equipment selection, IS loop calculations, and installation methodology.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

Upon completion, candidates will be able to:

  • Interpret and apply Ex equipment markings in a design context
  • Select Ex equipment based on area classification requirements
  • Perform IS loop calculations for single barrier configurations
  • Define correct installation methodology per applicable protection methods

In-Person + Online Exam

Five days of instructor-led classroom training at an iSkills facility, followed by an online theory examination.

Live Interactive Online (Zoom) + Online Exam

Five days of tutor-led live sessions via Zoom — same content and interaction as in-person, accessible from any location, followed by an online examination.

Both pathways are fully accredited and lead to the same CompEx Core Competence certificate.
