COMPEX FOUNDATION (EXF)

COURSE OVERVIEW

Working in or around explosive atmospheres demands more than caution — it demands knowledge. The CompEx Foundation (EXF) course at iSkills is a globally recognized introductory qualification designed to build essential awareness of potentially explosive and flammable environments, including areas where gases, vapours, and dust can form hazardous atmospheres.

Developed under the internationally respected CompEx framework, this course equips individuals with the foundational understanding they need to recognize risks, interpret safety signage, and operate responsibly within or around Ex (explosive atmosphere) zones — without requiring any hands-on practical assessment. Whether your organization needs to raise baseline hazardous area awareness across a workforce or you’re an emerging technician preparing for more advanced CompEx qualifications (Ex01–04), the CompEx Foundation course provides a clear, structured, and accessible pathway to competence.

Target Audience

This course requires no practical training & assessment  therefore suitable for non-technical personnel who require an understanding of Hazardous area work that does not  really required any hands-on work. It is also suitable for recently qualified technicians who wish to develop their knowledge before undertaking more technical CompEx qualifications.

Outcome

Successful candidates will receive an internationally recognized JLT-UK Certificate for Foundation in Hazardous Awareness, valid   for 5 years.

Delivery

  • OPTION-1: In-person plus  On-line exam.
  • OPTION 2: Self paced e-learning  plus  Online exam  (This online theory exam is undertaken at a training centre or can be undertaken remotely via our CompEx centre subject to prior arrangement.

None; although a reasonable standard of English is expected.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

By the end of this CompEx Foundation (EXF) course, participants will be able to:

  • Demonstrate a basic understanding of the directives and regulations governing hazardous areas
  • Identify and interpret the IEC 60079 series of standards relevant to explosive atmospheres
  • Explain why additional protections are necessary when working in or around Ex areas
  • Recognize Ex signage and understand the meaning of area classifications
  • Distinguish between activities that are permitted and those that are prohibited within Ex areas and on Ex equipment
  • Articulate the responsibilities of personnel operating in potentially explosive environments

In-Person Classroom + Online Exam

Candidates attend a structured, instructor-led classroom session at an iSkills training facility. The course is supported by expert trainers with extensive industry experience, ensuring participants benefit from real-world context, guided discussion, and Q&A throughout. The qualification is completed via an online theory examination.

Self-Paced E-Learning + Online Exam

Candidates complete the course content at their own pace through our accredited e-learning platform — ideal for those with shift-based schedules or geographically distributed teams. The online theory exam is taken either at an authorized iSkills training center or remotely, subject to prior arrangement with our CompEx center.

  • Upon successful completion of the online examination, candidates will be awarded: JTL-UK Certificate, Foundation in Hazardous Awareness (CompEx EXF)
